Decking Oils – Penetrating oils (like Aquakyd LG) which feed and protect decking boards without leaving a natural matte finish.

To achieve a natural appearance and penetration to the fullest extent → Select decking oils or penetrating sealers.
To achieve greater longevity and film accumulation → Resin rich systems should be considered.
High UV or coastal environments – Give more importance to products that have good UV protection and water resistance.
The timber should always be clean and dry and free of old loose coats before application. The majority of our products can be used on new and previously treated timber.
To ensure the optimal protection and life span, it is important that the application is done properly:
Surface Preparation
Wash the timber up, to eliminate dirt, mould, old loose coatings and greying. Wash with either a deck cleaner or a pressure wash (low pressure). Get the timber dry (in fine weather 23 days).
Sanding (if needed)
Coat any rough or already coated areas lightly with sand to enhance penetration.
Application
Use well mixed.
Working across the grain apply liberally with a brush, roller or lambswool applicator.
Make sure it is saturated completely – the timber must appear wet when being applied.
In the case of decking oils, 2-3 coats should be applied with intervals of 24 hours between coats (or as instructed on the product).
Drying & Curing
Always leave to dry 24-48 hours before light usage. Do not expose during the initial curing time to rain or heavy foot traffic.
Maintenance
Re-coat after 12-24 months of exposure. Periodic cleaning prolongs the interval between re-coats.
Pro Tip: Use during a dry day, with a temperature of 10°C to 25°C. Do not apply on direct hot sunlight.
Q: How often should I re-coat timber decking?
In harsh Australian sun and rain, decking oils typically need re-coating every 12–24 months. Penetrating sealers in more protected areas can last longer. Regular cleaning helps extend the interval.
Q: Can these coatings be applied over old timber?
Yes, with proper preparation.
Q: Do timber coatings change the colour of the wood?
Decking oils and natural penetrating sealers usually deepen the colour slightly and bring out the grain. If you want a stronger colour, tinted versions are available.
Q: Are these products suitable for coastal areas?
Yes — especially our water-repellent and UV-protected formulas.
Q: Is it better to use oil or a film-forming coating on decking?
Oils penetrate the wood and allow it to breathe, reducing the risk of cracking and peeling. Film-forming coatings can look great initially but often fail faster on walking surfaces like decks.
